The research by Prof Maria Tereza Fleury and Prof Afonso Fleury analyses a variety of leading Brazilian multinationals and examines their competences and competitive strategies in different settings. It aims at explaining (i) how the Brazilian environment influences the decision-making processes, (ii) how firms organize their resources in order to expand into foreign countries and (iii) the hurdles they encounter along the  internationalization process.

Afonso Fleuryis Professor in the area of Work, Technology and Organisation at the University of Sao Paulo and former head of the Production Engineering Department. He was a research fellow at: Institute of Development Studies (UK), Tokyo Institute of Technology, École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussés (France), Institute for Manufacturing, Cambridge University (UK) and prepared research projects for ILO, UNU, IDRC, UNDP, IDE, ECLAC as well as Brazilian institutions, covering different industries such as Aeronautics, Automobile, Capital Goods, Computing and Information, Machine-tools, Shoes, Software, Telecommunications, Textile/Apparel. He is currently engaged in research about the internationalisation of firms from Brazil, China, India, Russia and other emerging economies. He has published several books and articles on work organization, global operations and technological and industrial policy. His new book is “Brazilian multinationals: competences for internationalization”, Cambridge University Press, 2011. He is associate editor of the Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management and regional editor of Operations Management Research.

 

Maria Tereza Leme Fleuryis Dean of Escola de Administração de Empresas da Fundação Getulio Vargas. She was the former dean of the School of Economics, Business Administration and Accountancy FEA – USP for the period of 2002 – 2006, Full Professor of Management at Fundação Getulio Vargas and FEA/USP,  Visiting Professor at Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge UK; she was Research Fellow of Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, Institute for Development Economics Tokyo and Visiting Professor at ESSEC- France. She is member of the Academic of International Business; in 2010 she organized the AIB Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She has published 17 books, 55 chapters and almost 60 articles on Strategy and Competency Management, International Management, HR Management, Organization Culture and Labour Relations. She is member of the board of Academic and Professional Associations: ANPAD Brazilian Academy of Management – Director of International Relations, BALAS (Latin American Business Association), EUROMED/Marseille, FNQ, editor of RAUSP and member of editorial board of international and Brazilian journals. She has been doing consulting work for Brazilian and Multinational enterprises.
